Chai Jing (Journalist and Environmental Activist)

Profession: Journalist and Environmental Activist

Biography: Chai Jing is known for her investigative reporting and environmental activism.

She began her career in 1995 as a radio host in Hunan Province while still a college student. In 2001, Chai joined China Central Television (CCTV) as a reporter and presenter.

She first gained recognition for her coverage of the SARS crisis in 2003, reporting from the front lines of the outbreak. In 2008, Chai reported on the Sichuan earthquake, living among refugees to document their experiences firsthand.

Chai published her autobiography, "Insight" (2012), which became a bestseller in China. Her most significant work came in 2015 with the release of "Under the Dome" (2015), a self-financed documentary about air pollution in China. The film went viral before being censored by Chinese authorities.

Following the success (and controversy) of her documentary, Chai moved to Barcelona, Spain, in 2017 with her family. She continued her investigative work from abroad, producing "Stranger: Talking to Jihadists" (2023), a documentary series about Islamic terrorism in Europe.

She has been named Correspondent of the Year for her SARS coverage in 2003 and was listed as one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people in 2015. Despite facing false rumors of arrest and corruption charges in 2009 and 2010, Chai has also maintained her reputation.
